Hugo Hernandez immigrated to the United States at the age of seven and is the youngest of six siblings. As a first-generation college graduate, he has overcome numerous challenges in his journey.
Hugo worked as a migrant laborer in various states, including Texas, New Mexico, and Wisconsin. Despite the hardships he faced, he pursued higher education.
He attended the University of Texas at San Antonio, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies and a Master of Arts in Bicultural-Bilingual Studies. Additionally, he expanded his language skills through programs at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid in Spain and the Sorbonne University in Paris, France.
Hugo's commitment to bilingual education and advocacy is evident through his involvement in various organizations and leadership roles. He served as a student intern for the National Association for Bilingual Education (NABE) in Washington, DC. Furthermore, he has been deeply engaged with the Texas Association for Bilingual Education (TABE), holding multiple positions on the Executive Board, including Student Representative, Parliamentarian, Parent Representative, Vice President, Treasurer, and Legislative Chair.
Currently residing in San Antonio, Texas, Hugo works for Edgewood Independent School District (ISD). He has also taken on the role of past president for the San Antonio Area Association for Bilingual Education (SAAABE), underscoring his commitment to advancing bilingual education in the local community.Hugo Hernandez's dedication to bilingual education, support for teachers, and advocacy for the language rights of students in Texas is commendable. His journey and accomplishments reflect his strong belief in the power of language as a reflection of one's character and development, echoing the words of César Chávez: "Nuestro idioma es el reflejo de nosotros mismos. Un idioma es un reflejo exacto del carácter y el desarrollo de quien lo habla."
